"With the exhibition Symbiotica (Ionat Zurr and Oron Catts for Tissue Culture & Art), growing a 1/4-scale replica of Stelarc's ear (2003) , Kapelica Gallery gained valuable insights into the rigorous artistic practices involved in working with biomedia and the laboratory environment necessary to maintain aseptic conditions for tissue culture work. On this occasion, Symbiotica pioneered the public cultivation of human cells, simultaneously presenting a series of challenges that we needed to address. It was at this precise moment that we decided Kapelica Gallery needed to establish its own laboratory to support artists working in the field of tissue culture and synthetic biology."
