Linda Dement

I want a voice that would fail to pass for human.

Australian artist, writer and autodidactic multilingual coder Linda Dement has cunt-blazed her way through the media art realm since the 1990s. Early interactive narratives including Typhoid Mary (1991) and Cyberflesh Girlmonster (1995) wore their DIY queer unsteamed punk attitude and aesthetics as captivatingly as a taxidermed yellow duckling on a rose pink leather jacket. Dement shuttles on the creative loom between the warp of collaboration and weft of hermitude. Ideas suggest the medium, from the fully sensory roller derby bitch wheels experience of Bloodbath (2010) to XENO AI (2023), an AI text generation system spawning an amalgam whose cognitive world is built from misfit, queer, aberrant, outsider writings. Dement's works inspire VNS Matrix and infuse our thoughts with exquisite monstrous bafflement.

We are not like those malicious clouds that abuse our time and space, because we are made of nothing but illusions. We are the great downriver, nourished by a will to execute....Extra utter-danger. Our trajectory of existence is not what we expected. [source: you are the air we are rolling in, limited illustrated edition of output from XENO AI]
