Artist: Vivan Sundaram
Title: Memorial
Photo: Installation view, South London Gallery
In ‘Memorial’, Vivan Sundaram takes an image by the photojournalist Hoshi Jal of a victim of the 1992-93 attacks on Muslims in Bombay, India, in the wake of the demolition of the Babri Mosque by a Hindu supremacist mob in North India. This is an early instance of an artist referencing a media archive in India to create a poignant reminder of the human cost of a political breakdown.
Vivan Sundaram (1943 - 2023) was a significant painter and installation artist based in Delhi, and one of the pioneers of multi-media-based art practices in India
