Title: OncoGrrrls: What if we treat cancer as creative research?
Autors: Caro Novella
Oncogrrrls (always in lower case) is a performance activist project that aims to move cancer beyond the
individualization of the experience and into collective interrogation of the structural pains of cancer. Grounding the
practice in co-creation and somatic enquiry, Oncogrrrls creates joint interrogations, or exploratory rehearsals to
know cancer differently. From this creative inquiry we create performance pieces that take many forms (dance and
videoart, live performance and poetic texts).
"What if we treat cancer as creative research?" is an art exhibit that covers more than a decade of creative
research around the question: how do we make something about "it" and how do we make it together? a long
investigation on arts mediation for cancer justice that asks: how do we make cancer political through art making?
The exhibit includes documentation of performance work, videos, traces of performance workshops, fanzines,
literature and research about cancer that has informed the research. It also includes a participatory piece "what
would you ask cancer?"
